Shaping GME | Call for Comments
Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. The ACGME Board of Directors has approved a new process for all such major revisions going forward.
The process convened specialty-specific writing groups, who, along with members of the specialty community and leaders from other specialties and related fields, rigorously and creatively considered what the specialty will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). Out of this process, the Writing Group will draft and propose revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare the learners for current practice and generations to come.
The following writing group requests feedback. The scenario-based planning summary of themes and insights is posted for review and comment here. Submit comments using the electronic review and comment form.

NEW! Health Equity Grand Rounds
The third National Health Equity Grand Rounds event will be held on Tuesday, August 8 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Central.
Amid an era of historic clinician and practitioner shortages, the event will elevate strategies to support historically underrepresented populations within health education and clinical training programs to create a more diverse, inclusive health care workforce.
Developed by the ACGME, American Medical Association (AMA), National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, and RespectAbility, the National Health Equity Grand Rounds is a series of presentations by national leaders and experts on content designed to promote conversation and collaborative work toward a healthier future for all.
The event is free - register now. Additionally, CME credit will be offered at no cost to attendees. This activity has been approved for 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.
NEW! Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation Toolkit
The ACGME is pleased to announce the publication of the new Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation Toolkit, developed in partnership with nationally recognized content experts. The toolkit, available at no cost to the GME community, offers faculty development curricula for institutions that can be adapted to local needs and provides individual faculty members with techniques that will help them become better educators.
The toolkit includes components with a range of uses, from micro learnings that can be completed by individuals over a lunch break to full and adaptable curricula for group workshops. Reach for mastery in assessment—even experienced educators can improve their assessment skills!
NEW! MUA/P Interest Group Sessions
The ACGME will hold sessions for graduate medical education (GME) community members involved in addressing the needs of MUA/Ps (places or communities in which groups of people have unmet health or health care needs).
The aim of these interest group sessions is for the community to learn about efforts in GME and MUA/P, to solve for common challenges, and to share helpful knowledge and resources.
The first session, “Lessons Learned: Building a Sustainable Program with an Underserved Area/Population," will be held at Tuesday, August 22 at 3:00 p.m. Central.
Additional call dates are: Tuesdays, September 26; October 24; and November 28 at 3:00 p.m. Central.

Register for the National Learning Community of Sponsoring Institutions Meeting
Designed specifically for designated institutional officials (DIOs) and institutional leaders, the meeting will convene in Chicago and online September 19-20, 2023.
The meeting will provide unique opportunities for shared learning and peer support; foster community building among Sponsoring Institutions; and present a venue in which Sponsoring Institutions can collaborate, share successful practices to strengthen clinical learning environments, and solve challenges.
CLER Zoom Workshop: Teaming in the Clinical Learning Environment
The CLER Program is hosting a Zoom workshop to explore the concept, purpose, and value of teaming in the clinical learning environment as defined in the CLER Pathways to Excellence framework. The session will explore the characteristics of effective teaming while providing patient care, and will delve into the benefits of optimizing teaming in rapidly evolving health care environments.

TOMORROW! Resources for Sponsoring Institutions
The ACGME has created resources to help DIOs and institutional coordinators prepare for changes they will see in ADS this coming academic year. Beginning July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators will see updated taxonomy fields for Sponsoring Institutions and participating sites that they will be required to complete during next year's Annual Update.
Some new indicators have been added to the institutional list of participating sites, including the “not in use” and the blue “star” icons.
- The “not in use” indicator identifies a Sponsoring Institution’s participating sites that are not currently listed in their sponsored programs’ list of participating sites. These sites should be removed from the Sponsoring Institution’s list of participating sites if they will not be used by program(s).
- The “star” indicator identifies the participating sites to which the Sponsoring Institution sends the largest number of programs. As of July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators are responsible for updating the participating site type, ownership/control type, and Chief Executive Officer information of their Sponsoring Institution’s “most used” participating sites. Note: it is possible for a Sponsoring Institution to have multiple starred sites.

Fall 2023 Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment Course Returns to In-Person Format
The ACGME will offer its longstanding Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment course in person in the ACGME office in Chicago, Illinois, October 8-13, 2023.
This course is intended to help participants design and make improvements in their own assessment programs and strive toward achieving the goals of competency-based medical education.

Resident Research Mentoring Teams: A Support Program to Increase Resident Research Productivity

Scholarly activity is a requirement for most GME programs. The authors of this study found that support of resident scholarly activity, such as thorough implementation of a program like the resident research mentoring teams, is associated with increased presentations and publications of research projects.
2023 New Ideas Articles
Are there still novel interventions in GME? Yes! Each fall JGME receives an array of New Ideas submissions that briefly describe feasible interventions that have been implemented at least once with preliminary evidence of success in terms of outcomes and acceptability. The 2023 New Ideas articles cover an array of topics, such as Milestones assessment, health equity, diagnostic skills, peer mentorship, and more.

The Osteopathic Recognition Committee is seeking one new physician member. Candidates must be a Director of Osteopathic Education in a program with Osteopathic Recognition.
Nominations are due August 1, 2023. The Recognition Committee will forward its selections to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. The new member’s term will begin July 1, 2024 and end June 30, 2030.
