Registration is open for the National Learning Community of Sponsoring Institutions meeting—and early bird pricing ends this Friday! Designed specifically for designated institutional officials (DIOs) and institutional leaders, the meeting will convene in Chicago and online September 19-20, 2023.
The meeting will provide unique opportunities for shared learning and peer support; foster community building among Sponsoring Institutions; and present a venue in which Sponsoring Institutions can collaborate, share successful practices to strengthen clinical learning environments, and solve challenges.

NEW! Common Program Requirements
All specialty/subspecialty-specific Program Requirements have been updated to incorporate the interim revision to the Common Program Requirements effective July 1, 2023. The updated documents are available on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications tab in each specialty's section of the website.
NEW! Selected Topics Across Program Requirements Updated
The Selected Topics Across Program Requirements documents for number of faculty members; program director qualifications; resident/fellow scholarly activity; dedicated time for coordinators; dedicated time for program leadership; independent practice; and direct supervision using telecommunication have been updated to reflect the specialty- or subspecialty-specific Program Requirements in effect as of July 1, 2023.
All current documents can be found under the "Selected Topics Across Program Requirements" heading on the Institutional Application and Requirements page accessed from the Programs and Institutions menu on the website.

NEW! Call for Comments | Shaping GME: Vascular Surgery
Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. The ACGME Board of Directors has approved a new process, scenario-based strategic planning, for all major revisions going forward.
The process convened a Vascular Surgery Writing Group, who, along with members of the vascular surgery community and leaders from other specialties and related fields, rigorously and creatively considered what the specialty of vascular surgery will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). Out of this process, the Writing Group will draft and propose revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare the learners for current practice and generations to come.
The Summary of Themes and Insights from the scenario-based planning is posted for review and comment here. The Writing Group requests feedback by August 23, 2023using the electronic review and comment form.
UPDATED! Resources for Sponsoring Institutions
The ACGME has created resources to help DIOs and institutional coordinators prepare for changes they will see in ADS this coming academic year. Beginning July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators will see updated taxonomy fields for Sponsoring Institutions and participating sites that they will be required to complete during next year's Annual Update.
Some new indicators have been added to the institutional list of participating sites, including the “not in use” and the blue “star” icons.
- The “not in use” indicator identifies a Sponsoring Institution’s participating sites that are not currently listed in their sponsored programs’ list of participating sites. These sites should be removed from the Sponsoring Institution’s list of participating sites if they will not be used by program(s).
- The “star” indicator identifies the participating sites to which the Sponsoring Institution sends the largest number of programs. As of July 1, 2023, DIOs and institutional coordinators are responsible for updating the participating site type, ownership/control type, and Chief Executive Officer information of their Sponsoring Institution’s “most used” participating sites. Note: it is possible for a Sponsoring Institution to have multiple starred sites.
ACGME staff members will review these changes at upcoming open Zoom meetings held on the following Tuesdays:

NEW! Fall 2023 Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment Course Returns to In-Person Format
The ACGME will offer its longstanding Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment course in person in the ACGME office in Chicago, Illinois, October 8-13, 2023.
This course is intended to help participants design and make improvements in their own assessment programs and strive toward achieving the goals of competency-based medical education.

Graduate Medical Education’s Role in the Battle for Evidence-Based Care

In the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, several US states have enacted, or are poised to enact, legislation that will take away the rights of patients and physicians to consider and choose evidence-based, high-quality care. This JGME editorial lays out the consequences these laws have for GME, as well as what actions can be taken. It also introduces several special June articles, from the perspective of different specialties, on the immediate and long-term effects of this legislation.
Enhancing Resident Education by Embedding Improvement Specialists Into a Quality and Safety Curriculum

This Original Research article discusses the impact of embedding continuous improvement specialists into residency quality improvement and patient safety curricula. Conducted at the University of Michigan, the intervention examines how integrating these specialists into the curriculum would improve the quality of A3 documents (the one page-reports that summarize quality improvement and patient safety projects).
ACGME Seeks Osteopathic Recognition Committee Member
The Osteopathic Recognition Committee is seeking one new physician member. Candidates must be a Director of Osteopathic Education in a program with Osteopathic Recognition.
Nominations are due August 1, 2023. The Recognition Committee will forward its selections to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. The new member’s term will begin July 1, 2024 and end June 30, 2030.

ACGME Seeks Public Member
The following Review Committee seeks its next public member for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2024. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Review Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care professionals are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs.

The following Review and Recognition Committees seek nominations for their next resident member positions. Nominees must be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program at the time of the appointment and may not serve more than one year beyond completion of that residency or fellowship.
