Join a Discussion Forum on Revising Foundational Competencies for Undergraduate Medical Education

The ACGME, Association of American Medical Colleges, and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine are launching an initiative to create a common set of foundational competencies for use in undergraduate medical education programs in the US. This initiative aligns with recommendations outlined by the Undergraduate Medical Education-Graduate Medical Education Review Committee and is part of a comprehensive effort by all three organizations to improve the transition to residency.

Click on one of the following dates and times to register to participate in an upcoming forum; register for just one session as content will be identical.

September 9, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Eastern
September 19, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Eastern

The initiative will engage educators, students, residents, faculty members, and the public, beginning with a series of discussion forums from across medical education to collect input for the project team. The sessions will begin with a project overview and ask participants to explore questions related to the evolution of competency-based education in undergraduate medical education, such as:

  • What will we expect all future physicians to be able to do, know, and value regardless of their specialty? What will we need to teach and assess to ensure an ideal future workforce?
  • For those working in medical education, what frameworks for competency-based education are currently being used and what does "use" mean at the local school level?
  • What are implications to adopting a common set of competencies across undergraduate medical education that align with graduate medical education?

Call for Comments | Shaping GME: The Future of General Surgery

Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. The ACGME Board of Directors has approved a new process for all such major revisions going forward.

This new process, scenario-based strategic planning, involved the General Surgery Writing Group, members of the surgery community, and leaders from other specialties and related fields in rigorously and creatively thinking about what the general surgery specialty will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). From this process, the writing group will propose revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare learners for practice now and decades to come.

The writing group requests feedback. The scenario-based planning summary of themes and insights is posted for review and comment here.

Submit feedback to surgery-reviews@acgme.org by September 20, 2022.

NEW! JGME Articles of the Week

Competing Incentives: For-Profit Hospitals Add Complexity to Graduate Medical Education (Commentary)
David Jacob Aizenberg, MD; Jeffrey R. Jaeger, MD
This commentary on the article "Quantifying For-Profit Outcomes in GME: A Multispecialty Analysis of Board Certifying Examination Pass Rates in For-Profit Affiliated Residency Programs" addresses the growing involvement in graduate medical education of for-profit hospitals and raises concerns about other ways in which for-profit status might affect education and training.

Gender Microaggressions During Virtual Residency Interviews and Impact on Ranking of Programs During the Residency Match
Karen K. Hoi, MD; Lulia A. Kana, MD, MS; Gurjit Sandhu, PhD; Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil; Suzy McTaggart, MS; Jessa E. Miller, MD; Erin L. McKean, MD, MBA
Microaggressions—verbal, behavioral, and environmental exchanges that send denigrating messages to individuals because of their group membership—are often subtle and difficult to detect. This brief research article is the first to look at the prevalence of gender microaggressions during virtual residency interviews, examining applicants’ recall of experiencing them, and whether they influenced programs’ positions on applicants’ rank lists.

The Effect of Information Presentation Order on Residents' Diagnostic Accuracy of Online Simulated Patients With Chest Pain
René A. Tio, MD, PhD; Marco A. Carvalho Filho, MD, PhD; Marcos F. de Menezes Mota, MS;
André Santanchè, PhD; Sílvia Mamede, MD, PhD
There is currently a lack of empirical evidence regarding whether the order in which information is presented to physicians influences the clinical reasoning process. This study, conducted at 15 cardiology programs in the Netherlands in 2019, investigates whether a resident's diagnostic accuracy of chest pain cases is influenced by presentation order of the patient's history and the patient's electrocardiogram.
