#ACGME2023 Is Here!

More than 4,000 attendees from all corners of academic medicine will gather in Nashville for the ACGME's first in-person conference since 2020! The ACGME Annual Educational Conference, the largest graduate medical education (GME) conference in the world, kicks off this week with Full-Day Courses Thursday, engaging educational sessions, networking opportunities, the return of the Exhibit Hall, posters highlighting the latest research and innovations in GME, and more!

NOTE: Online registration is closed; on-site registration will be available in Nashville.


NEW! Requirements Updated with Common Program Requirement Revisions

The specialty- and subspecialty-specific Program Requirements, including all multidisciplinary subspecialties, now reflect the revised Common Program Requirements, effective July 1, 2023. The updated documents can be found on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications page of each specialty's section of the ACGME website, under the “Future Effective Date” header.

NOTE: The Program Requirements for Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management will be posted at a later date, with an announcement at that time through this e-Communication.


2024 ACGME Awards

The ACGME is now accepting nominations for its 2024 awards. The ACGME recognizes notable designated institutional officials, program directors, residents and fellows, institutional and program coordinators, programs, institutions, and specialty organizations for their outstanding work and contributions to GME through its Awards Program, which includes:

  • David C. Leach Award
  • Debra L. Dooley GME Program Coordinator Excellence Award
  • GME Institutional Coordinator Excellence Award

Michelle Ihn Suh, MD, MAT; Marc David Robinson, MD; and Nicole Deiorio, MD discuss the hidden curriculum around incarcerated patients in GME and how learners, faculty members, and others can educate themselves about caring for this vulnerable population. NEW! Documenting Core Faculty Members in Emergency Medicine

Programs anticipating a core faculty member turnover of greater than 50 percent need to provide the following documentation to help the Committee better understand the changes and their impacts:

  • The circumstances of and rationale for the faculty changes
  • Anticipated effects on the program
  • Curriculum vitae of each new faculty member

Call for Comments | Shaping GME: The Future of Emergency Medicine

Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. As part of the revision process, the Writing Group for Emergency Medicine requests feedback on the Summary of Themes and Insights that will guide development of the new Program Requirements for Emergency Medicine. The summary document is posted for Review and Comment here.

Submit feedback by April 5, 2023 using the electronic form available in the Shaping GME table on the Review and Comment page.


Meeting and Agenda Closing Dates Posted

ACGME Review and Recognition Committees are updating their meeting and agenda closing dates for future meeting cycles. Review Committee meeting dates are listed on the overview page for each specialty on the ACGME website. The Osteopathic Recognition Committee dates are available here.


ACGME Seeks Public Members

The following Review Committees seek their next public members for six-year terms. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Review Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care professionals are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs.

Leadership Skills Training Programs for Chief Residents

Learn More and Register Today

This workshop is designed to provide a transitional experience into the role of chief resident. Small-group sessions and exercises offer incoming chief residents the tools, skills, and a learning environment designed to increase their understanding of their personal leadership styles, strengths, and weaknesses as leaders, developing knowledge and appreciation of group and interpersonal behavior and learning additional skills critical to success and satisfaction as both a clinician and leader.

All programs, held in Chicago and Philadelphia, are open to chief residents from all medical and surgical specialties.
