The 2023 ACGME Annual Educational Conference is just about six weeks away, and excitement is building! While the agenda is packed with timely, relevant, and inspiring sessions, two presentations attendees always want to hear about are the Keynotes. The ACGME recently announced the Marvin R. Dunn Keynote Address, which will take a different format this year as a panel discussion. Similarly, this year’s Closing Plenary will be presented as a conversation, and this is another not-to-miss session.
A Conversation on the Future of Graduate Medical Education
The last few years have challenged the world in ways unprecedented for this generation, and the field of medicine has remained at the center of these challenges. For this year’s Closing Plenary, Debra Weinstein, MD, executive vice dean for Academic Affairs, professor, and chief academic officer at University of Michigan Medical School and Michigan Medicine, will interview and converse with ACGME President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP on his views regarding the future of graduate medical education (GME).
Dr. Weinstein previously served as vice president for Graduate Medical Education at Mass General Brigham and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Weinstein is a graduate of Wellesley College and Harvard Medical School. She trained in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and served there as a chief resident and associate chief and director of Residency Training in Medicine. Dr. Weinstein has been actively engaged in medical education research and innovation, and was the initial Principal Investigator for a $2M “Reimagining Residency” innovation grant from the American Medical Association focused on competency-based, time-variable GME. Dr. Weinstein is a Trustee of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and has served on the Boards of Directors of the ACGME and the MGH Institute for Health Professions. She is a past-chair of the Association of American Medical College’s Group on Resident Affairs, was a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on the Governance and Financing of GME, and chaired the Macy Foundation conference on reforming GME, as well as two National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine workshops on GME outcomes and metrics. Dr. Weinstein is a member of the New England Journal of Medicine’s Perspectives Advisory Board and served as Deputy Editor of Academic Medicine from 2013-2019. She was a 2006-2007 American Council on Education Fellow and has been honored by the ACGME with the Parker Palmer Courage to Lead Award (2007) and the John C. Gienapp Award for Distinguished Service (2020).
Prior to joining the ACGME, Dr. Nasca was senior vice president for Academic Affairs at Thomas Jefferson University and the Anthony and Gertrude DePalma Dean of Jefferson Medical College. He left the deanship at Jefferson to assume the leadership of the ACGME in December 2007. In May 2009, Dr. Nasca became the founding president of ACGME International, whose Board of Directors he now chairs. Dr. Nasca is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology and has been a member and leader of a number of organizations with a mission of advancing excellence in medical education. He is a former chair of the ACGME Review Committee for Internal Medicine and served as special accreditation consultant to that Review Committee and the ACGME. He was also a member of the Council on Graduate Medical Education of the Department of Health and Human Services and the US Congress. Among his numerous recognitions, Dr. Nasca received the Dema C. Daley Founders Award for Excellence in Internal Medicine Education from APDIM, the Rev. Clarence Shaffrey, S.J. Award from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, the John C. Leonard Award from the Association of Hospital Medical Education, the Jefferson Medical College Alumni Achievement Award, and the Founders Award from the Dr. Thomas Dooley Society of the University of Notre Dame. He was named one of the 50 Most Powerful/Influential Physician Executives in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 by Modern Healthcare. He is the author of over 160 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and other publications, and has delivered more than 450 invited lectures on topics related to medical education.
Following the Closing Plenary, the Annual Educational Conference will conclude with a “Toast on the Terrace” for attendees and ACGME leaders and staff members to recognize and celebrate three days of learning, networking, and building connections.
