#ACGME2023 for the Global Audience

December 8, 2022

With international travel returning to pre-pandemic levels, the ACGME looks forward to welcoming international attendees and continuing its grow engagement with the international graduate medical education (GME) community at the largest GME conference in the world. The ACGME 2023 Annual Educational Conference will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, February 23-25, 2023.

The conference is the perfect occasion to network with GME peers and learn about the benefits of accreditation, recognition, and other programs and initiatives. Whether your organization is contemplating accreditation, in the process of establishing accreditation, or exploring ways to improve GME in your home country or region, you will find leading subject matter experts on a wide variety of GME topics gathered together for invigorating discourse.

The ACGME Hub
In the Exhibit Hall, “the ACGME Hub” is a centralized location where attendees can meet with staff from various ACGME departments and initiatives, including two global-centric groups:

  • ACGME Global Services, the global advisory and consulting arm of the ACGME that provides advisory, training, and administrative support services to organizations interested in developing and improving accreditation services across the globe
  • ACGME International (ACGME-I), the independent accreditor of GME programs outside of the United States

This joint presence in the Hub will allow international attendees and US-based GME community members with an interest in global GME to learn directly from ACGME and ACGME-I staff members how Global Services and ACGME-I can help them improve graduate medical education through accreditation.

The Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME), the peer-reviewed journal dedicated to improving GME, will also be present in the Hub. JGME is encouraging contributions from around the world. In a recent article, A Welcome to International Authors, the journal offered resources and suggestions to help international authors improve the likelihood of their submissions being accepted. JGME staff members and editors will be available in the Hub to answer questions and discuss ideas.

Educational Sessions for a Global Audience
Several educational sessions in the conference agenda are designed specifically for a global-interest audience. ACGME Global Services will present Post-Graduate Medical Education beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic, featuring the much-anticipated results from a recent survey of global GME thought leaders and offering strategies for moving forward.

ACGME-I will host two separate educational sessions. The first is an Update on International Accreditation from the ACGME-I Team, which will take an in-depth look at the activities of the Review Committees-International. The presentation will also discuss new initiatives and plans for ACGME-I.

The second panel, Innovation and Research in International GME, will focus on educational research and innovation in ACGME-I-accredited Sponsoring Institutions and programs while providing ideas on how to conduct educational research in an international context across borders, cultures, and medical practice patterns.

Other Activities and Events
ACGME-I will host a reception for global guests and others who seek to engage with their international peers in a convivial atmosphere. Planning is underway and more information and details will be shared closer to the event.

The ACGME and ACGME-I will also present their annual awards during the conference. The 2023 ACGME International awardees – HE Dr. Hilal Al Sabti, Dr. Kang Sim, and Dr. Fatima Msheik El-Khoury – will be honored alongside their US counterparts for their efforts to improve GME in their home countries.

Several activities and events are planned to facilitate and encourage networking, including a mentor/mentee program; family-focused interest, personal well-being, giving back to the local community, and more. Be sure to review the Activities page of the conference website for more information, and to keep an eye on this Blog for other details as the conference approaches!

And last but not least, the conference offers an opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Nashville. Explore "Music City" and its countless live music venues, enjoy the history, food, and nature of this city and region with old colleagues and new friends.

We understand that planning global travel may be more challenging than before the pandemic, so we encourage you to plan ahead. We look forward to engaging with the global GME community once again at the 2023 ACGME Annual Educational Conference.

Registration for the conference is now open. See you in Nashville!
