With profound sadness, appreciation, and gratitude, the ACGME mourns the unexpected passing of Leon L. Haley Jr., MD, MHSA, CPE, FACEP, FACHE, a member of the ACGME Board of Directors since September 2020, serving on three Board Standing Committees. Dr. Haley was a highly-respected member of the health care community. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of UF Health Jacksonville, vice-president for Health Affairs and Dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine–Jacksonville, and professor of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Haley was an exceptional physician and leader and his relentless pursuit to reduce health inequities remains inspirational. He was also a fierce voice of leadership in the fight against COVID-19, advocating for the health and safety for care providers and patients alike throughout the pandemic to date.
“Dr. Haley was a tremendous voice in advocating for the underserved and a highly regarded physician. This is truly a great loss,” said ACGME President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP. “The ACGME joins the rest of the health care community in mourning a wonderful father, son, mentor and advocate for the profession he passionately served.”
The ACGME sends sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, and to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
