On July 8, 2019, the ACGME filed a response in the United States Bankruptcy Court regarding the Hahnemann University Hospital closure. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for July 16, 2019.
The ACGME asked the court to require Hahnemann to uphold its policy regarding the residents'/fellows' need for timely placement in accordance with the ACGME requirements regarding closure of an accredited program.
The Hahnemann residency/fellowship closure policy states:
The ACGME facilitates accreditation considerations that make it possible for residents and fellows to transfer to other programs. The ACGME is grateful for the overwhelming response from the GME community; more than 1,000 available positions for displaced residents/fellows have been cataloged as of July 9. The ACGME accreditation teams and Review Committees are expediting the consideration of requests related to Hahnemann’s closure, including temporary and permanent complement increase requests from programs that would like to accommodate the transfer of displaced residents/fellows.
The ACGME welcomes additional requests from programs able to accommodate Hahnemann’s current residents and fellows. For programs interested in offering positions, refer to the original post from June 27, 2019.
All available positions will be compiled and periodically disseminated to the Hahnemann Graduate Medical Education Office. Residents and fellows should contact their program director and/or designated institutional official with any questions about the transfer process, since the ACGME is not directly involved in resident or fellow placement or decisions related to funding.
The ACGME wishes to express its support for everyone affected by the planned closure and will continue to provide updates on the status of residency and fellowship programs.
