Description of Review Committees: There are three types of Review Committee(s): Specialty Review Committee, Transitional Year Review Committee, and Institutional Review Committee. Each sets accreditation standards, provides peer evaluation of programs or Sponsoring Institutions to assess the degree to which these comply with the published educational requirements, and confers an accreditation status on each program or Sponsoring Institution regarding meeting those standards.

Description of Recognition Committees: A Recognition Committee grants recognition of the of ACGME-accredited programs or Sponsoring Institutions that meet the Recognition Requirements. The Recognition Committee sets recognition standards and determines substantial compliance with the published Recognition Requirements, following a process of evaluation and peer review.

Composition of Review and Recognition Committees: Review and Recognition Committees have members with expertise in specialty/subspecialty areas or other relevant expertise, in addition to a member who is a resident or fellow in an ACGME-accredited program at the time of appointment, and a public member. Members (except the resident and public member) are nominated by Committee-specific nominating organizations and are confirmed by the ACGME Board of Directors. Each Committee solicits nominations from nominating organizations, the public, and/or the graduate medical education community. Committees soliciting nominations should do so with sufficient notice to allow a nominating organization to identify and submit the names of at least two candidates for each vacancy to the committee’s executive director at least 12 months before the date of the appointment. Committees should solicit and consider candidates consistent with Policy 3.00 (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Composition of the ACGME Board and Committees) and shall not consider nominees from same institutions or city/metropolitan area of current membership at the time of appointment.

Qualifications Considered for Review and Recognition Committee Public Members:

  • Professional and educational experience
  • Prior committee, board, and group experience
  • Personal or patient experience with the health care system

Review and Recognition Committee public members are also members of the ACGME Council of Public Members (CPM). The CPM meets twice each year; it advises the ACGME Board, providing valuable input and feedback about patient safety, GME, and accreditation.

Nomination of Resident Members to Review and Recognition Committees:
The process takes approximately 12 months from the call for nominations until the member’s term begins. The Review and Recognition Committee executive director requests nominations through the ACGME e-Communication and/or via letter to the specialty-specific professional organizations that have resident/fellow groups.

Review and Recognition Committee resident members are also members of the ACGME Council of Review Committee Residents (CRCR). The CRCR meets twice each year; it advises the ACGME Board, providing valuable input and feedback about resident/fellow matters, GME, and accreditation.

The required nomination documents vary slightly by Review and Recognition Committee, but usually include:

  • A letter of recommendation
  • A statement of support from the nominee’s program director
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter from the resident/fellow outlining educational goals, professional interests, and intent to serve, if selected

Resident members must be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program at the time of appointment and may not serve more than one year beyond completion of residency or fellowship.

Similar to the process of selecting non-resident members, the Committee reviews the nomination documents and selects one candidate to recommend for confirmation by the ACGME Board of Directors.
