Valuing Scholarship by Manuscript Reviewers: A Call to Action
Deborah Simpson, PhD; Lalena M. Yarris, MD MCR; Anthony R. Artino, Jr, PhD; Gail M. Sullivan, MD, MPH
Volunteer peer reviewers play a vital role in scholarship, contributing to a process that benefits the author’s work, the reviewer’s own educational development, and the field of study as a whole. Their efforts are often anonymous, and yet their contributions frequently result in extensive revisions that advance the quality of the work. Many institutions, however, still do not recognize peer reviewing when assessing scholarship. This editorial by JGME’s Editor-in-Chief and three Deputy Editors makes a strong case for the importance of peer reviewing and argues that reviewers should start receiving credit from promotions or merit review committees. Action steps are suggested for those committees, along with steps that journals and reviewers themselves can take in order to help bring further recognition to this important scholarly activity.
It Takes a Village: Guidance on Mentoring Black Residents and Fellows
Artina Dawkins, PhD, MPA C-TAGME; Cherece Grier, MD, FAAP
One of five articles in this month’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice section, this Perspectives piece looks at the importance of mentorship, particularly for historically underrepresented minority (URM) medical students, residents, and fellows. With a combined 12 years of experience in leading such URM mentor programs, the authors present ten important lessons as advice to organizations or institutions that are considering initiating such programs on their own. Lessons include building a mentor network, training mentors, matching mentors and mentees, and facilitating discussion of difficult topics.

Specialty/subspecialty-specific program requirements have been updated for those that have elected to permit direct supervision using telecommunication technology effective July 1, 2021. The ACGME Board of Directors recently approved revisions to program administration dedicated time and support Common Program Requirements. While these revisions were being deliberated, the proposed revisions specific to obstetrics and gynecology residency program administration dedicated time and support (posted for review and comment in late 2020) were put on hold. Now that the revised Common Program Requirements have been approved, the Review Committee has finalized the support required for residency program directors, associate program directors, and program coordinators. The revisions are based on guidelines provided by the ACGME Board to foster consistency across Review Committees. The revised administration dedicated time and support requirements can be found under “Future Effective Date 2022” on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications page in the Obstetrics and Gynecology section of the ACGME website. See Program Requirements II.A.2.a) and II.C.2.a). The revised administrative support requirements are effective July 1, 2022.
Also available on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications page in the Obstetrics and Gynecology section of the ACGME website are revised ACGME Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology effective July 1, 2021. This version can be found under “Currently in Effect” and includes all approved revisions with the exception of those related to program administration dedicated time and support.
